The Gift of "Love"

By Dr. Jane C. Pan

Mother Teresa once said the words that deeply touched my soul. "There are many in the world who are dying for a piece of bread, but there are many more dying for a little love."

What more can you do besides buying gifts for the ones you love? During this Christmas, season when the businesses are cajoling you to buy, buy, and buy, do not forget what is the underlying reason for celebrating Christmas with your love ones. What does love mean to you when you are preparing for the Christmas season?

I remembered the very first time when my husband gave me a Christmas gift. It was a necklace made up of a tiny heart and a very small diamond in the middle. He was a poor graduate student at that time and did not have the monetary resource to buy me an expensive gift. Even though the gift did not appeal to me then, but what he said did. "This is a heart that represents mine which has nothing in it except you, a shining little diamond." I knew then, how much he loved me.

When you say you love your spouse dearly, then you need to give the best gift you can find. Sometimes this gift is not something money can buy. A gift that is carefully selected which represents your genuine love for your spouse. It may be working at your skills of communication, for example, men who really want to improve in their listening skills to build up their marriages. It may be a simple saying of "I Love You" and mean it with loving deeds. It may be acknowledging your wrongdoings and make things right with your spouse.

Did you know that Christmas is really a gift of love? It is a perfect gift from God when He gave us His son as a sacrifice for all humankind. Jesus came for the sole purpose of dying on the cross for our sins. The Bible said, "All of us have strayed away like sheep. We have left God's paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the guilt and sins of us all." Isaiah 53:6

Just as Mother Teresa said, many people today are dying for a little love. The ultimate love we can receive is the unconditional love of God. If you desire to receive the perfect gift for yourself and for your spouse whom you love very much this Christmas, then you need to receive and give the premier gift. That is the gift of "love" from God.
